If you’re new to Bristol or living in student accommodation for the first time, understanding how to use the bins properly is essential. Not only does it help keep your shared spaces clean and pest-free, but it also supports Bristol’s recycling efforts and prevents unnecessary council charges to residents.

Here’s everything you need to know about recycling and waste disposal in your Bristol student accommodation.

Why does recycling matter?

Recycling in Bristol isn’t just about sorting your rubbish — it’s about doing your part for the environment. Using the correct bins keeps waste collections running smoothly, prevents overflows, and helps reduce landfill waste. Bristol is proud eco-friendly city.

Where should you take your rubbish?

Every property has a designated bin store — please make sure all rubbish and recycling goes inside the correct bins and that lids are always kept closed. This prevents littering and helps keep pests away.

Bin collection schedule:

  • General waste (black bin) – collected every other week
  • Recycling bins – collected weekly

Don’t overfill your bins or leave rubbish outside. Overflowing bins can result in council fines or additional charges, which nobody wants!

What goes in each bin?

Small Green Bin – Cans, Foil & Plastic Containers

Cans, tins, foil, and clean plastic bottles or containers

❌ No glass

❌ No plastic bags

Make sure items are clean and empty before putting them in.

Small Black Bin – Glass & Paper

 Glass bottles and jars

  Paper (magazines, newspapers, etc.)

❌ No cardboard or brown paper

❌ No broken glass

Handle glass carefully — if it’s broken, wrap it safely and dispose of it in general waste (black bin).

Blue Bag – Cardboard & Brown Paper

 Cardboard boxes (flattened)

 Brown paper and packaging

❌ No tape, plastic, or drinks cups

❌ No food-stained boxes or takeaway packaging

Clean, dry cardboard only — contamination can stop the whole bag from being recycled.

How can I be even more sustainable as a student?

  • Bring your own reusable bags when shopping 🛍️
  • Repair or recycle old clothes instead of throwing them away 👕
  • Buy only what you need to avoid food waste 🍎
  • Reuse plastic tubs and jars where possible ♻️
