Going to University can be an exciting time, but it can also be quite nerve wracking. Many students worry they will feel homesick and it can naturally take time to settle into a new place. One way to help minimise the transition is to make your student accommodation feel like home.
It doesn’t take much, a few simple things can help you move in easily.
-
Bring home comforts
It may sound obvious, but bringing things that remind you of home will help you to settle into your new place quicker and make the new space feel less ‘new’.
This could be anything from your place back home, such as:
- Your bedding
- Pillows/ cushions
- Your favourite mug
- Blankets/ throws
- A sentimental piece of jewellery to wear to keep loved ones close to you.
2. At- home hobbies
If there is something specific you enjoy doing when you’re at home, bring this with you to your new place. This could be gaming, knitting, yoga.
Not only will this make help you feel more at ease, but hobbies are also great for your mental health.
3. Accessorise
Get creative with your new space. Now is the time to make this place truly yours so personalise it as you see fit.
- Hang pictures of loved ones on the wall (just get permission from the landlord first).
- Be creative with wall art- posters and canvases are a great way to put your own stamp on a place.
- Choose lighting that will create a calming space for you to relax in. Think carefully about how you will use the space to ensure you get the correct lighting.
4. Go green
Houseplants are a fantastic way to keep your new home feeling homely, clean and fresh without taking too much time.
Many houseplants require minimal watering and can be left for you to just enjoy.
5. Scent is just as important
Ever walked into a room and the smell instantly reminds you of something? Smell is just as important for revoking calm and warming feelings and can help many people feel more at ease.
Think about investing in reed diffusers or think about what smells reminds you of home; perhaps a certain food ingredient or washing powder you used back home.
6. Get comfy
Finally, you won’t be able to relax in a place unless you feel comfy. Invest in some comfortable clothes for when you want some downtime which will help you relax.
