A new mural has arrived in Bristol, and the team at Urban Student are proud to have been a part of it. We’re excited to share a brand-new mural overlooking Park Street, celebrating Bristol’s amazing street art scene. The 60 foot artwork is painting on the side of our Charlotte’s Rise student accommodation, giving everyone in the area and community something to enjoy.
This mural brings back the iconic 2018 floral artwork by Bristol artist Jody Thomas, originally made for The Florist shop that sat at 71 Park Street. Over the years, it became a favourite spot for students, locals, and visitors. When we transformed 71 Park Street into 16 modern student apartments, the mural was hidden – so we decided to decommission it, giving it a fresh, bigger home at 16 Charlotte Street. And thus The Florist 2.0 was born!
To make it even more special, we teamed up with Bristol artist Andy Council, famous for turning buildings into animal designs. Andy added a twist by incorporating local landmarks from Park Street, Clifton and College Green into the petals of Jody’s floral design. The result is a mural that honours Bristol’s street art history and tells a story about the city’s architecture.
The mural is now open for the public to enjoy—right outside Charlotte’s Rise.
Our Director Jonathan Brecknell says:
“Park Street is an important part of our story as a company, and we knew we had to do something special to honour the original mural. This project is our way of saying thank you to Bristol for inspiring us for over two decades.”
What the artists had to say:
As Jody Thomas:
“It was wonderful to revisit the much-beloved mural—this time bigger and better. I jumped at the chance to work with my good friend Andy, adding his unique style to give a fantastic new twist to the wall.”
Andy Council:
“The delicate petal and leaf shapes required me to bend and fit the buildings of the Park Street area in ways I found very complicated. I wanted it to look as similar to Jody’s original painting as possible but also reflect my style and the local area.”
If you’re walking up Park Street anytime soon, look up – you can’t miss it!
