Urban Creation, a Bristol-based high quality real estate development company specializing in period properties located in and around Clifton and Park Street, has partnered with final year graduates of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (BOVTS) in presenting a live-stream socially distanced production of two theatre pieces by playwright Edward Allan Baker, North of Providence and Dolores, directed by MA Directing graduate, Victor Lirio, designed by MA Design graduate, Carly Brownbridge, and featuring BOVTS acting graduates James Burman, Esmée Cook, Nancy Farino, and Chanel Waddock.
The live-stream for these productions—filmed in an Urban Creation space—will be available for viewing on the Bristol Old Vic and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School websites with the following schedule: North of Providence: 07 August at 8PM; Dolores: 08 August at 8PM.
These productions were cancelled due to the global lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent UK government’s ease on restrictions and new social distancing guidelines has allowed for these local theatre artists to produce an innovative, filmed live theatre performance using multi-camera live-stream technology of Mavis, another presenting sponsor.
Jonathan Brecknell, Director/Owner of Urban Creation, said: “The pandemic has been tough for many sectors including the performing arts, an industry at peril that has been an integral part of our culture since the Restoration. We are in the midst of a cultural catastrophe. Now, more than ever, we need to support the arts. Urban Creation builds creative spaces and it is our pleasure to partner with Bristol Old Vic Theatre School artists and provide them with a soundstage space so that they can finish what they started before the lockdown happened. It is our small way of supporting our local artists.
Director Victor Lirio, commented: “This production was part of the Directors’ Cuts season originally scheduled at The Wardrobe Theatre in May as our final year directing and design collaboration project. We are grateful to Jonathan Brecknell and Urban Creation for providing us with a creative space to transform into a soundstage for socially distanced livestream. Because of this, we are able to amplify this theatre production to virtual audiences by using the internet, film and television broadcasting techniques. We will be able to reach a much wider audience than we would have reached in a traditional theatre space.”
The two plays focus on sibling relationships. North of Providence journeys through a painful crisis between brother and sister, uncovering old family wounds on the last day of their father’s life. In the play, Dolores, a woman escapes her dangerously abusive husband and seeks help from a sister who doesn’t want to get involved.
On Mr. Baker’s plays, the New York Times wrote: “Edward Allan Baker takes a painful domestic crisis and transforms it into one-act plays of emotional depth and conviction.”
Members of production and technical teams are COVID-19 Safety at Work certified and Corona Virus Awareness on Production trained. Best practice for health and safety will be strongly enforced during production.
