Bristol is a city known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and world-class educational institutions. It has hosted many talented students over the years, including those that have stayed with Urban Student. But did you know it has a large famous alumnus?
Over the years Bristol has been a nurturing ground for numerous individuals who have gone on to achieve greatness in their respective fields. Do you know any of these big names?
Russell Howard (Bristol UWE)
Comedian Russell Howard, known for his stand-up comedy and television shows like “Russell Howard’s Good News,” attended the University of the West of England. He in fact, grew up in the area; If you’ve watched any of his shows, you’ll notice his strong west country accent!
Angela Carter (University of Bristol)
Angela Carter, a celebrated novelist, and short story writer attended the University of Bristol. Her works, such as “The Bloody Chamber,” have been influential in feminist literature.
Simon Pegg (University of Bristol)
Simon Pegg is a renowned actor, comedian, and writer. His successful career includes iconic roles in movies such as “Shaun of the Dead”, “Hot Fuzz” and the “Star Trek” franchise.
David Walliams (University of Bristol)
Best known as a comedian, actor, and author, David Walliams studied drama at the University of Bristol. His comedic talent shines through in his work, including his popular children’s books and roles in various television shows.

Gene Wilder (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School)
This isn’t a wildly known one, but a very exciting one indeed! American actor, screenwriter, director, producer, singer-songwriter, and author Gene Wilder did in fact, study in Bristol. After graduating in Iowa, he studied at The Old Vic Theatre in Bristol before embarking on a lengthy career in stage. He went on to play a role most know and love, Willy Wonka!
Paul Dirac (University of Bristol)
Moving into the realm of science, Paul Dirac, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, studied electrical engineering at the University of Bristol. His ground-breaking contributions to quantum mechanics have left an enduring impact on the field.
