So, the festive season has come to an end, and we’re slowly getting back into the everyday routine. As students, January can feel like a daunting month with the return to classes and the weight of upcoming exams. Not to mention the cold and dark weather. On days where we’d rather be tucked up in the warm, the post-holiday blues can start to set in, but fear not! This blog post is here to guide you on how to beat the January blues and start the new year on a positive note.
Set Realistic Goals
Instead of overwhelming yourself with grand new year’s resolutions, set achievable and realistic goals for the month. Break down your larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks. This will not only give you a sense of accomplishment but also help you stay motivated throughout January.
Create a Routine
Establishing a routine can provide structure and stability, which is essential for beating the blues. Plan your days with a healthy balance of study, down-time, and relaxation. A well-structured routine will make the transition from holiday mode to student life smoother.
Stay Active
Exercise has proven massive benefits for mental health. Incorporate physical activity into your routine, whether it’s going to the gym, taking a jog, or budding up and going for a walk with friends. Physical exercise releases endorphins, which can help lift your mood and combat the January blues.
Connect with Friends
On the note of buddying up, reconnect with friends and classmates. Socialising can be a great way to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness and those January blues. Plan fun activities or study sessions together to make the transition back to Uni life more enjoyable.
Embrace the Season
Instead of resisting the winter chill, find joy in the season. Take advantage of winter activities, such as ice skating, winter walks, or enjoying a cosy evening with friends. Or simply cosying up in your accommodation with a great Netflix series. Embracing winter can help shift your perspective and make January more enjoyable.
Prioritise Self-Care
January is an excellent time to focus on self-care, especially at a time where leurgy’s are at a high! Make sure you get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when needed. Practicing mindfulness or meditation can also help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
Seek Support
If you find yourself struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Whether it’s talking to friends, family, or seeking assistance from your university, there is always help available.
All in all, keep warm, cosy and look after yourself. Wishing you a very happy start to 2024!
