Welcome to your new home! Living in student accommodation can be a fun and exciting experience, but it also comes with its own set of responsibilities. Here’s a handy guide to help you learn the essentials of living in your new space.
- How to Use a Washing Machine
- Sort Your Laundry: Separate whites, darks, colours, and delicates.
- Add Detergent: Use the recommended amount of detergent. Check the machine for instructions on where to add it.
- Select the Cycle: Choose a cycle based on the type of clothes. For regular laundry, a cotton cycle usually works well. You can typically find what type of wash your clothes need by looking at the label on your clothing.
- Start the Machine: Close the door securely and press the start button.
- Drying: Once done, transfer clothes to the dryer or hang them up to dry. It’s good to get an indoor drying rack, and a dehumidifier to ensure your clothes dry as quickly as possible.
- How to Use a Dishwasher
- Load the Dishwasher: Place dirty dishes, glasses, and utensils facing downwards. Avoid overcrowding for effective cleaning.
- Add Detergent: Use dishwasher tablets or powder in the designated compartment.
- Select the Cycle: Choose a normal cycle for everyday dishes; use heavier settings for pots and pans.
- Start the Dishwasher: Close the door and press the start button. You can usually hear when the dishwasher has turned on, and can track it’s cycle this way.
- Cleaning Essentials You’ll Need
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Great for surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Sponges and Cloths: For wiping surfaces and scrubbing.
- Broom and Dustpan: Keep your floors tidy.
- Mop and Bucket: For deep cleaning hard floors.
- Bin Bags: Always keep a supply for your bins so that you don’t run out.
- Cupboard Must-Haves for Your Food Shop
- Staples: Pasta, rice, canned goods, and spices.
- Snacks: Crisps, nuts, and granola bars for quick munching.
- Fresh Produce: Fruits and vegetables to keep your meals healthy.
- Proteins: Eggs, tinned beans, or frozen meat for balanced meals.
- Beverages: Coffee, tea, and juice.
- Essential Items to Have in Your Accommodation
- First-Aid Kit: It’s good to always be prepared for minor injuries.
- Basic Tools: A screwdriver, hammer, and tape measure for any odd jobs.
- Bedding and Towels: Extra sets for comfort and convenience.
- Kitchen Utensils: A good knife, chopping board, and measuring cups. At Urban Student, we do offer fully furnished and equipped student accommodation, to make your life easier!
- How to Clean Out a Hoover
- Unplug the Hoover: Safety first!
- Empty the Dust Container: Remove and dispose of dust in the bin.
- Check the Filters: Clean or replace filters as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect the Hose: Make sure there are no blockages.
- Reassemble: Put everything back together and you’re good to go!
- How to Descale a Shower or Sink
- Gather Supplies: You’ll need a shower descaler product, or you can make a homemade version with white vinegar, baking soda, and a cloth or sponge.
- Apply Descaler: Leave for an hour.
- Scrub with Baking Soda: Cover drain or shower head with descaler. Leave to sit for half an hour to an hour.
- If using vinegar, after soaking, sprinkle baking soda on any remaining deposits and scrub gently.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Make sure to rinse away all products.
- Rubbish and Recycling Tips
Managing your waste is crucial. Here are some tips for keeping your accommodation tidy and environmentally friendly:
- Check Bin Guidelines: Visit the Bristol City Council for clear instructions on what goes in each bin.
- Use Reusable Bags: Reuse plastic bags from shopping or invest in a fabric bag.
- Recycle Clothes: Take old clothes to recycling centres or consider upcycling.
- Be Mindful of Your Purchases: Before buying, think about whether you really need it.
Remember: Misusing bins can lead to additional charges, so always be mindful of your waste disposal!
Living in student accommodation can be a breeze with a bit of organisation and care (and Urban Student). We hope this guide helps you settle in comfortably and responsibly. If you have any other questions, we’re always on hand to answer them!
