How does laundry work in student accommodation?

For most students, washing means a shared laundry room and a pay-per-load system. In Save the Student’s 2026 survey, fewer than one in six rents included laundry (Save the Student, 2026). Nearly everyone else pays per wash and per dry, every week of term. Money goes onto an operator’s app or a prepaid card before anything gets washed. Then each cycle is charged. Sometimes, and it’s fair to check before you move in. If your flat has its own washer-dryer, it’s yours alone. Otherwise there’s a laundry room in the building itself. We keep it to no more than five residents per machine. The washers and dryers are semi-commercial Electrolux, built for constant use, and kept separate. So there’s rarely a wait. And nothing to pay.

Do you pay anything on top of the rent to do laundry?

No. Beyond the rent you already pay, there’s nothing to add. It’s bundled in with the bills and the fortnightly housekeeping, at no separate charge.

Included washing is genuinely rare, and it’s easy to assume you have it until the first term’s costs land. In the same 2026 survey, even cleaning appeared in only 21% of student rents (Save the Student, 2026). So what would a year of paid washing actually cost you?
